double take: look-alike sunnies

I was shopping downtown with Lauren this weekend and stumbled across a super cute pair of sunnies, vaguely reminding me of a pair I’d seen before. Later, after regretting not buying them, it dawned on me that they were the perfect pair of look-alikes for the highly coveted Karen Walker “super duper strength” pair that I’ve seen on quite a few bloggers that I follow (see: here, here + here).  For only $16, it’s a fantastic affordable find (one day, Karen Walker, one day soon…)

I’m a sucker for blush pink. Anything pink, actually.

Home accents, flowers and paper goods are the usual culprits, as I almost always steer clear of the girly hue for clothing. Pink can be too much of a pop, even gaudy, but not when it comes to the barely-there shade for these super cute slides. They’re the perfect mix of pretty + playful (and fairly practical, too). Currently on sale at Piperlime, they were a no-brainer buy.

With classes all day on Mondays, I threw on this comfy waffle-knit tunic sweater for my usual go-to casual attire (+ a little extra punch of pink) for a jam-packed schedule.

How do you wear pink in the winter?

A strong start to the week always requires a good look, especially as we head into the (somewhat dreaded) winter months. I love a good autumn-worthy outfit, so let’s hope snow doesn’t come too soon!

To jump into November, I’ve been eyeing this Zara plaid scarf (above, right) for weeks and finally gave in – the perfect combination of shades for Thanksgiving and the increasingly brisk season. The oversized striped scarf (left) is a colorful addition to any bundled up ensemble. Clearly, I have a weakness for a good plush scarf…

The flats, though perforated, are a fun take on a classic, solid slip-on – good for a little playful pop just up until the snow starts to accumulate.

Why polaroids? I love the idea of veering away from all things digital and capturing the moment in another artistic sense – just a fun idea for the coming weeks as the semester winds down.

A phone case update is long overdue – I’m in love with this clear one from Kate Spade. What better for a winter pick-me-up than a little reminder of sunshine?

And most importantly (or so I feel), the panama hat is this year’s ultimate accessory. It’s just about time to finally add one to my own wardrobe, and this soft brown shade is just muted enough to pair perfectly with many layered neutrals.

What are your chilly weather must haves?

Call me biased, but Vermont is probably the most stunning place during the (short-lived) autumn months. St. Mike’s has perfected the ivy-covered, fall-leaf natural allure, which calls for equally seasonal attire. This gold-embroidered army green jacket is just the right thickness for keeping warm during chilly walks to class, but not overheating when the sun decides to peek through (typical indecisive Vermont weather). This geo-patterned scarf is from the men’s section at Urban Outfitters & it never loses its body like so many scarves do – honestly, UO is my only reliable scarf source thus far.

P.s. – how beautiful is this lighting? My lovely friend Lauren Carter has been killing it with my blog photos – check out her site here!IMG_2552IMG_2566IMG_2559IMG_2561IMG_2576IMG_2543

BDG plaid & shades of blue

Scarves can be tricky. Sometimes a tad too short, often not fluffy after their first wear – unless  you opt for oversized. My last two scarf purchases, both from UO, look rather long and overly plush at first, but when worn naturally, they take the perfect shape. This “brushed plaid” fringe-edged blanket scarf can be wrapped around once or twice to be worn long & dramatic or thick & cozy. I fell in love with the deep gem tones, just bold enough for brisk-weathered perfection. I paired it with a thin, light blue Brandy Melville sweater, black jeans and my classic Sperrys – daring to brave the chilly weather in lighter layers, but a solid mix of similar hues.

soft stripes

It’s always refreshing to find an hour or so in the week to get downtown and [window] shop along Church Street. Overly-packed schedules and running from class to class can be draining, but the energy & quirkiness of Burlington is the best way to refocus and feel like an actual part of society again (in opposition to stowing away in the dark corners of academic buildings for hours on end. Not real life.)

This grey striped Project Social T top from Urban is without a doubt the softest tee I’ve ever come across – so much so that I was compelled to buy a second in a super light shade of brown (the perfect shade for brunettes, when otherwise I try to steer clear of brown altogether) – I wore it in an Insta post yesterday. The striped version paired perfectly with my leopard burlap cordones from Toms – a subtle mix of prints that isn’t too overpowering.

Strut! show & sweater weather

Another fall in Burlington means the return of the annual Art Hop, the weekend-long arts festival showcasing all things art/eccentric/Vermont. Last year we spent an evening walking through a bunch of galleries and indulging in the always-essential Ben & Jerry’s, but this year’s trip to the Art Hop had more of a direct purpose. Lauren, Cara and I attended the Strut Fashion Show to film for a multimedia to be featured in the first issue of our college newspaper, The Defender. The vibe of the whole event is really the best part, though – so perfectly Vermont.

The afternoon was a (thankfully) chillier than the 90 degree weather we’ve been enduring for the last few days, so I was thrilled to break out this new camel knit sweater – the MOST comfortable & will definitely be a favorite this fall.

It was a crisp fall day here in Stellenbosch! I was finally forced to switch out sandals for my go-to studded loafers, which paired perfectly with this green embroidered-shoulder utility jacket that I almost didn’t pack (thank goodness I did). Not in the mood to deal with my hair in the wind, I opted for a baseball cap to top everything off. Don’t hesitate with adding a cap to a casual daytime look – see below for some of my picks!

Before heading back up to Vermont today after a lovely fall break at home, my father took one look at my chosen outfit and said that it makes me look like a reporter. Well, whatever that means, I didn’t argue – that’s exactly what I intend to be.
